Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC)

Overview

The BI houses Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC; Class II, Type A2) within our Containment Level (CL)-2 biological culture labs to provide protective work environments to handle sterile or biological samples. These cabinets protect samples, workers and the working environment with adaptive air curtains and HEPA filters. The slanted sashes minimize glare, while the stainless steel interior allows for a large work area with easy cleaning. BSCs are equipped with UV sterilization, sash height and air curtain safety alarms and are NSF-49 certified, annually.

Two BSC models, depending on the lab:

  • Baker SterilGard, Class II, Type A2, available in 4 foot (Model SG403A-HE) or 6 foot (Model SG603A-HE) length, depending on the lab.
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific, Class II, Type A2, available in 4 foot size (Model 1382).

Four culture spaces (click on the lab to learn more about the culture space):

  • Suitable for CL-1 and CL-2 work
  • Sterile work environment

Sample
Requirements

  • Uses of the BSC must be within the McMaster Biosafety Program

System
Requirements

  • Users require active McMaster Biosafety Training
  • Approval of the type of biological work is required
