Centrifuges

Overview

The BI has numerous centrifuges to concentrate and separate a variety of samples with varying speeds.

Various Quick Spin microcentrifuges

Spin up to 8 x 1.5/2mL samples (fixed rotor).

Maximum rotor speed: 6 000 rpm (2 000 RCF).
Sample: 1.5 mL or 2 mL microfuge tubes.

Thermo Fisher Sorvall Legend Micro 21 Microcentrifuge

Spin up to 24 x 1.5/2mL samples (fixed rotor).

Suitable for biological samples, when using the rotor with the ClickSeal Biocontainment Lid.

Maximum rotor speed: 14,800 rpm (21 100 RCF).
Sample: 1.5 mL or 2 mL microfuge tubes.

Thermo Fisher Sorvall Legend Micro 21R Microcentrifuge

Spin up to 24 samples (fixed rotor) with refrigeration control.

Suitable for biological samples, when using the rotor with the ClickSeal Biocontainment Lid.

Maximum rotor speed: 14,800 rpm (21 100 RCF).
Sample: 1.5 mL or 2 mL microfuge tubes.

Thermo Fisher Sorvall Benchtop ST8R

Spin microfuge tubes, centrifugal tubes or plates with refrigeration control. Rotors are fixed or swinging, depending on the sample size.

Suitable for biological samples, when using the rotors with the appropriate ClickSeal Biocontainment Lid.

Thermo Scientific Savant DNA SpeedVac (Concentrator)

Spin and concentrate samples by evaporating unwanted solvents when combining speed, vacuum and heat. Typical applications include concentrating DNA/RNA from low volume buffers or ethanol/isopropanol-water solutions.

Model: DNA120-115
Maximum rotor speed: 1 725 RPM (300 RCF).
Sample: 36 x 1.5 mL microfuge tubes.
Temperature control: ambient (low), 43oC (medium), 65oC (high).

Ultracentrifuges Thermo Fisher Ultracentrifuge WX90

Spin various sample volumes with refrigeration control at ultra-high speeds (>37 000 RPM or >200 000 RCF). Rotors are fixed or swinging, depending on the sample size.

Some centrifuges are also located within CL-2 labs to support cell culture activites.

Instrument
Uses

  • Concentrating
  • Separating

Sample
Requirements

  • Liquids
  • Sample amounts must be within the weight range of rotors

System
Requirements

  • Non volatile substances
  • If samples are biological, biocontainment lids must be used to contain aerosols
