Incubators

Overview

The BI houses various temperature controlled incubator and ovens:

VWR General Purpose Incubators (Model 1546) offer precise, digital, temperature control. Constructed with a heated outer door and an inner clear door, samples may be viewed without compromising temperature uniformity. The stainless steel interior reduces the risk of contamination. They are located in the bacterial culture lab.

CO2 Incubators (Panasonic/Sanyo; MCO-19AIC & Thermo HeraCell) have stainless steel interiors, capable of incubating samples up to 50°C, with precise CO2 control (0-20%). With interior humidifying pans, units can reach 95% relative humidity when at 37oC. The MCO unit is equipped with the SafeCell UV system and alarms for door ajar, temperature, CO2 and humidity. They are located in mammalian culture labs.

Thermo Fisher MaxQ 6000 Incubating and Orbital Shakers may function continuously or from 0.1 to 999 hours, at speeds ranging from 15 to 500 rpm, and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 80°C. The unit is equipped with a universal platform ensuring compatibility with culture tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks, and microplates. It is located in the bacterial culture lab.

Thermo Fisher MaxQ 8000 and 8000-R (refrigeration) Orbital Shakers may function continuously or from 0.1 to 999 hours, at speeds ranging from 15 to 500 rpm, and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 80°C. The unit is equipped with a universal platform ensuring compatibility with culture tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks, and microplates. It is located in the bacterial culture lab.

VWR Microplate Orbital Shaking Incubators operate at temperatures up to 65oC, either continuously or for set times of 1 s to 9999 minutes, and speeds between 100 and 1200 rpm. It is designed to fit up to 4 microplates or two tube racks for 1.5-2 mL microtubes. Also available with an opague lid to protect light sensitive samples.

Four culture spaces (click on the lab to learn more about the culture space):

Instrument
Uses

  • Temperature controlled incubation of samples
  • Culture of RG-1 and RG-2 pathogens
  • Suitable for CL-1 and CL-2 work

Sample
Requirements

  • Uses of incubators with biological samples must be within the McMaster Biosafety Program

System
Requirements

  • Users require active McMaster Biosafety Training when working with biological samples
  • Approval of the type of biological work is required
