BI Facilities

The Biointerfaces Institute Facility

The Biointerfaces Institute facility supports and optimizes research initiatives towards the development, understanding and advancement of material and biological interfaces – the “Biointerface”.

The BI is a collaborative environment to support and optimize research initiatives within areas of high-throughput synthesis and screening, point-of-care diagnostics, drug delivery, surface characterization, polymer chemistry, bioassay development, biomaterials, biosensors, and ophthalmic biomaterials, and create a multi-disciplinary work environment to foster collaboration and gain expertise in the areas of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering.

The instrumentation to support the various research initiatives are organized into suites based on various work-flows, and summarized below.

BI Equipment Suites

The BI Biological Preparation Suite Biological Preparation Suite Details

The Biological Preparation Suite provides lab space and equipment for the preparation, purification, and analysis of biological agents (Risk Group 1 & 2: mammalian and bacterial) and/or molecules. This suite includes biological safety cabinets (BSCs), incubators, centrifuges, microscopes, and other equipment supporting life sciences work.

The BI Synthesis and Screening Suite Synthesis & Screening Suite Details

The Synthesis and Screening Suite includes two Tecan robots to support high-throughput planning, development and implementation of projects relating to material synthesis and surface chemistry.

The BI Surface Characterization Suite Surface Characterization Suite Details

The Surface Characterization Suite features an Imaging and Scanning X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS), which allows for large and small area spectroscopy, as well as high-throughput analysis. Other items complement surface and particle characterization of chemical composition, size, tensile strength, hydrophobicity and adsorption.

The BI Bioselectivity Suite Bioselectivity Suite Details

The Bioselectivity Suite includes sensitive mass spectrometry equipment.

The BI Diagnostics Suite Diagnostics Suite Details

The Diagnostics Suite focuses on the screening and printing of molecules for point-of-care diagnostics. Equipment includes a MiSeq sequencer, Bioanalyzer, Kingfisher, and Monolith, along with multiple contact and non-contact printers.

The BI Sartorius BioProcessing Lab Bioprocess Automation Lab

New for 2025 – the BI Biomanufacturing Suite will support large-scale CL2 research.
