Biological Preparation

The Biological Preparation Suite supports bacterial or mammalian research initiatives. Culture spaces are approved for Containment Level (CL)-1 and 2 research with Risk Group (RG)-1 or 2 pathogens, and include numerous Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (Baker; NSF-49 certified) to support sterile and safe work environments.

Information Box Group

Bacterial Culture Lab

The bacterial culture spaces have standard equipment for the growth of bacteria, including biological safety cabinets, stationary incubators, shaking incubators, and centrifuges. Culture growth can be assessed with a plate reader (Tecan: Infinite M200 Pro) via absorption, fluorescence or luminescence experiments.

Mammalian Culture Lab

The mammalian culture lab supports mammalian cell culture with basic culture equipment, including biological safety cabinets, CO2 incubators and centrifuges. The space also includes an automated cell & particle counter (Invitrogen: Cell Countess I) and a liquid nitrogen storage unit (Thermo Fisher: CryoPlus1).

BI Equipment

Other supporting equipment includes benchtop autoclaves for sterilization (Tuttnauer), microscopes for histology and cell observation (Olympus: Inverted IX51 & Upright BX53), ultracentrifugation for high speed separation (Thermo Fisher: Sorvall WX90), thermal cyclers for amplification (Biorad: PCR & RT-PCR), and a high volume chromatography unit for size and affinity separation (GE/Cytiva: AKTA Avant 150).
