Lab Access & Training
Access to BI labs and training for use of BI equipment is restricted to “BI Users”. “BI Users” are individuals, with McMaster IDs*, who complete certain McMaster Safety Training and BI-specific Training. Completing these site-specific items are mandatory for lab access in order to maintain a safe working environment. *These steps require a McMaster ID; if you don’t have one, please contact us.

Instructions
- To become a “BI User”, complete Steps 1 to 5, as outlined below, and gain independent access to BI labs on weekdays, between 8.30am and 4.30pm (excluding holidays).
- Step 6 is an optional item for “BI Users” who wish to extended BI access to weekdays & weekends, between 7am and 11pm. Individuals must meet BI Working Alone eligibility criteria. This optional step can be submitted at any time for processing.
- Once Steps 1 to 5 are complete, “BI Users” may reach out to BI Staff for equipment training. Following equipment training, independent use of equipment is granted.
Step 1
BI Safety Training Matrix
- Verify your McMaster Safety Training by comparing the BI Safety Training Matrix to your Mosaic Training Summary.
- Ensure the necessary modules are listed as “Completed” and not expired. Expiry dates are based on the McMaster Corporate Training Matrix.
- Create a *.doc or *.pdf document of your Mosaic Training Summary. It will be needed in Step 3.
Step 2
BI Training Module Form
- Complete the BI Training Module to review the BI Safety Program and affiliated policies.
- Be sure to submit the form at the last question (Q23).
Step 3
BI Training Module Quiz
- Complete the BI Training Module Quiz.
- You must get all answers correct to meet BI entry requirements.
- You may submit the form more than once, until you pass.
Step 4
BI Training Form (.doc)
- Complete the BI Training Form.
- Ensure both you and your supervisor affirm and sign the form.
- Submit the form electronically to the BI (biointerfaces@mcmaster.ca) or drop-off in person to the BI Main Office (ETB 416; weekdays 8.30am to 4pm, excluding holidays).
Step 5
MacLIMS Login and Signup
- Ensure you have an active MacLims account.
- If you don’t have an account, please sign up for one.
- If you have an account, please add the BI as a facility.
NOTE: McMaster University is changing its Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), starting in Summer 2024. However, the BI’s migration date is not finalized and we are still using the Maclims system. Users will be notified prior to the ‘go-live’ date.

BI Working Alone Form
- *Optional: If needed and eligible, complete the BI Working Alone Form for after-hours access (weekdays & weekends 7am-11pm, excluding holidays).
- Ensure that you and your supervisor affirm and sign the form.
- Submit the form electronically to the BI (biointerfaces@mcmaster.ca) or drop-off in person to the BI Main Office (ETB 416; weekdays 8.30am to 4pm, excluding holidays).
- *After-hours access is not open to undergraduate students.
